Finalist for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014

Visit the newly reopened museum, described as “an unmissable stop on the Sussex art trail”.

The museum focuses on the artists and craftspeople who made Ditchling a creative centre in the early 20th Century. The museum has undergone a major redevelopment to create a “local museum recast to national standards of display and architecture”.

In 2014 the museum’s display focuses on the key members of Ditchling’s Arts and Crafts community – including Eric Gill, the calligrapher Edward Johnston (responsible for the famous Johnston typeface used for London Underground), the painter David Jones, the printer Hilary Pepler and the textile designer Ethel Mairet.

New visitor facilities include a café serving delicious tea, coffee and locally sourced cakes and our shop stocks a wide range of books and gifts, influenced by the Museum’s collection. Ditchling Museum of Art+Craft is family friendly and fully equipped for your visit. There is free admission for under 16s and a free children’s trail available.

Learning is an integral part of what the museum has to offer, and we have an engaging programme of activities for all ages and abilities; from specialised creative workshops and lectures to early years discovery sessions.  Throughout Art in Ditchling we will be opening our new learning space, so that visitors can enjoy free hands on activities and craft demonstrations.

The museum is also showing work by Kirsty Lumm as part of the Artists Open Houses Young Peoples Project.
